      Burundi Visa Policy

Burundi has an official visa policy that makes it mandatory for visitors from most countries to obtain visas from foreign missions before arriving in the country. However, the government created a special visa-on-arrival program for visitors arriving at the Melchior Ndadaye Airport in Bujumbura, including through any of its land borders with neighboring countries.

These are two out of three application options for foreign nationals. Visitors issued visas on arrival are allowed to stay in Burundi for up to one month.

Burundi also has a special e-visa program for visitors who prefer to secure their visas before arrival. The e-visa program is designed for short-term visits that will last up to 30 days, counting from the day they arrive in the country. E Visa applications are done online, and the applicant has to complete an online application form. They must also attach copies of their documents to the application and pay a processing fee.

E visas are processed within three days or less, but they can also take up to 5 days depending on certain factors beyond your control, suffice it to say that the application takes less time than embassy applications. They are also the best alternative to visas on arrival, which may cause visitors to wait for a considerable time for visas. Also, note that the Burundian e-visa is a single-entry visa.

      Visa Exemption

Burundi only grants visa exemptions to a few countries, most of which are African countries. Ordinary passport holders from these countries may visit for up to 90 days, provided they only do so for tourism and other noneconomic engagements.

As for diplomatic and service passport holders from selected countries, they can visit Burundi without visas for official assignments on behalf of their government or consulates.

      Transit Passengers

Passengers that have confirmed onward flight tickets from Burundi to another country must remain in the airport's transit area. They must also have documents like visas or residency permits for their next destination. However, a transit visa will be required if they wish to exit the airport at any point before their next flight. Immigration officers on duty will request these documents.

Key Information About Burundi e Visa

As you prepare your application and make your way to Burundi after your application is approved, here are some important details to remember.

It Cannot Be Extended: This e-visa cannot be extended once approved. While some visitors are eligible for extended stay, others are not.

Before you travel with an e-visa, ensure your itinerary and enquire if you are eligible for extensions. If not, we advise you to apply for a long-stay visa rather than an e-visa.

For Single Use Only: Bear in mind that this visa can only be used once, not for multiple entries. If you plan to visit Burundi frequently, apply for a different entry document that can be used for multiple visits to save costs.

For Air and Land Entry: You can use your e-visa to access Burundi by air and land. The Melchior Ndadaye Airport in Bujumbura is the most active in the country. There are no sea routes because Burundi is a landlocked country.

Print Out A Copy: Endeavor to print a copy of the visa once you get it. Also, travel with a copy, as the immigration officers will ask for it to ensure you are a legal visitor.

Visa Fee Payment: You can pay the visa fee with a credit or debit card. The card does not have to be yours, but it should contain a sufficient amount to cover the application and transaction fees. Note that you will be unable to submit the application without paying the visa fee.

Travel With The Same Passport:  Always travel with the passport you used for your e-visa application. The e-visa is linked to the passport; if you arrive with a different passport, you will not be allowed into the country.

Not A Work Visa: Visitors coming to Burundi with an e-visa are reminded once again that the visa is only for social, transit, and business visits of a noncommercial nature; it is not a work visa, nor can you use it for permanent residency. Holders are advised to use it for the purpose for which it was issued.

Always Be Law Abiding: Always be law-abiding during your time in Burundi. Obey the law, and stay within what is allowed by your visa. The maximum duration is 30 days, so avoid staying a day more. Also, avoid activities that are illegal during your visit.
